Our Purpose

The Hillman Grad Network was founded by Emmy-Award winning writer, producer, and actress Lena Waithe to provide free resources, opportunity, and access to emerging artists in the entertainment industry. Navigating your way through Hollywood can be a difficult and confusing process, but with mentoring and guidance, the path to success can be much smoother.

Our mentoring program is designed for screenwriters and producers in the Los Angeles area. Our netowrk provides classes, and career opportunities and training, and more. The amount of effort you put into the program will determine your outcome. We require a serious level of commitment from all participants and a sincere dedication to improving your craft.

Lack of participation or unresponsiveness may result in removal from the program. To ensure that we are truly serving those in need, we routinely re-evaluate mentees to determine if the program is a right fit.

The Hillman Grad Network strives to increase the amount of diverse representation in media for those in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes.

Members are given valuable resources to grow their skills through classes, writing groups, networking, and career opportuinites.

Actors Play LA's Open Gym is an evening event where actors come together and focus on various techniques and skills to enhance their craft. Each Open Gym offers actors the opportunity to focus on their development in the following: Scene Study Character Development Improvisation Script Analysis On Camera Technique Voice and Movement No membership is required. You may need to write a lot of dialogue to explain backstory or crucial information to the audience but you don’t want to bore people either. Think of ways to incorporate action in dialogue heavy scenes to keep your audience engaged.
Each year, the Academy Nicholl screenwriting competition awards up to five $35,000 fellowships to amateur screenwriters. To enter, submit a feature length screenplay and entry fee via the online application when the competition is open for submissions. Fellowship winners are invited to participate in awards week ceremonies and seminars and expected to complete at least one original feature film screenplay during the Fellowship year.
